Three light earthquakes were recorded off Puerto Rico’s northeastern coast on Sunday, producing minor shaking in parts of the island but no reports of injuries or damage.

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, the strongest event measured magnitude 3.8 and occurred approximately 85 kilometers north of Culebra at a depth of 44 kilometers.

That earthquake followed a magnitude 3.7 tremor recorded about 83 kilometers north of Culebra at a depth of 40 kilometers. Earlier in the day, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck roughly 76 kilometers north of Culebra at a depth of 8 kilometers.

All three earthquakes were centered offshore in the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico.

While residents in some areas reported feeling light shaking, there were no reports of injuries, property damage, or disruptions to services.

Small earthquakes are common in and around Puerto Rico, which lies near the boundary of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates. Most seismic events in the region are minor and cause little more than brief shaking.

Sunday’s earthquakes were recorded within a span of just over two hours, with all three occurring north of Culebra in an area that regularly experiences seismic activity.
