The World’s Largest Cruise Port Operator Is Coming to This Caribbean Island, With New Berths, Bigger Ships and More Shore Excursions

The harbor sits beneath a wall of green volcanic peaks, the first stop in a chain of 32 islands that stretches south toward some of the most coveted anchorages in the Caribbean.

And now it’s poised for a major transformation, Caribbean Journal has learned.

Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to enter exclusive negotiations on the management, development and operation of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cruise Port.

Under the agreement, the two sides plan to negotiate a concession deal under which Global Ports Holding would manage the cruise port on behalf of the government, which will retain ownership of the facility.

It’s a significant move for a destination that has been steadily climbing the ranks of the Southern Caribbean cruise map, anchored by its strategic position near Barbados, Saint Lucia and Grenada (along with other broader regional destinations like Acapulco).

It’s also become one of the fastest-growing stayover tourism destinations in the region since the debut of the island’s new Sandals resort.

The port in Kingstown currently welcomes more than 200,000 cruise passengers each year, a number the company sees as just the beginning.

If a final deal is reached, Global Ports Holding plans a two-phase investment program aimed at modernizing the port’s infrastructure, expanding berthing capacity, accommodating larger cruise vessels and enhancing the passenger experience.

The company also plans to help develop new shore excursion opportunities in collaboration with the government and local stakeholders, with a focus on creating opportunities for local businesses and communities.

The deal continues Global Ports Holding’s rapid expansion across the Caribbean, where the company already operates a growing portfolio of cruise ports in destinations like Antigua, Nassau and St. Lucia.
