For much of the last two years, the Dominican Republic has been making tourism history seemingly every month. And that was true again this week with the country topping another major milestone: 11 million visitors in one year.

Dominican Republic Tourism Minister David Collado was on hand to welcome the 11 millionth visitor at the Punta Cana International Airport: Bruce Pirt, who was traveling to the country with his wife and two daughters on a flight on an Air Transat flight from Canada.

It’s “another historic record for Dominican tourism.” Collado said.

The 11 million number includes both stayover and cruise passengers, although stayover tourists account for the vast majority of the total.

Last year, the country set its previous record, 10 million visitors.

So what’s next on the agenda?

14 million annual visitors by the end of 2028, according to Vice President Raquel Peña.

Are you heading to the Dominican Republic right now? While the country has been working successfully to promote destinations like Santo Domingo and Miches, it’s still Punta Cana that reigns supreme. Here’s a look at some cheap flight options to Punta Cana International Airport, according to Google Flights.
