Why Foodies Need to Visit Antigua and Barbuda This Spring

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 15, 2024 - 1:02 pm

It’s one of the most dynamic restaurant scenes in the Caribbean: the twin-island destination of Antigua and Barbuda, which last year kicked off its first-ever Restaurant Week

The two-week-long culinary celebration highlights discounted meals, special gastronomic events and a host of artistic and cultural exhibitions across the country.

This year will also see a 100-day-long food and cultural pop-up called the “Pepperpot Rum Shop.”

The event puts the island’s broad spectrum of culinary experiences in the spotlight, says Shermain Jeremy, Special Projects and Events Manager at the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. The ABTA hopes to draw what Jeremy called “record-breaking participation,” both from foodie travelers and locals alike.

This year’s Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week will include an impressive slate of chefs, all of whom have Caribbean heritage: Kareem Roberts from the UK; cookbook author Althea Brown from Colorado; Chef Angel Barreto of Anju in Washington, DC; Chef Shorne Benjamin of Fat Fowl in Brooklyn; Chef Rigby Stridiron of Latha Restaurant and Bar in Arizona; and sommelier Nadine Brown from Washington’s At Your Service.

“We are seeing more and more travelers around the world choose Antigua and Barbuda as a vacation destination,” said Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez”Building on the success of 2023, Antigua & Barbuda Restaurant Week will continue to raise the visibility of our culinary excellence in the region and around the world, and we are certain our guests will delight in immersing themselves into our food and our culture.”

This year’s event will feature special prix-fixe menus from 20 different restaurants.

As for the Pepperpot Rum Shop, it will be hosted by celebrity Chef Andi Oliver, who last year published his signature cookbook, “The Pepperpot Diaries: Stories From My Caribbean Table.”

The pop-up will kick off starting in the end of April.
