The Haitian government’s Office of the Secretary of State for Public Security announced the creation of a new security hotline for the country.

The “177” number, created in partnership with telephone network Noula, directs callers to a call centre to answer questions about public safety.

A government statement said the measure was implemented as part of President Michel Martelly’s effort to increase security in the country.

The “177” centre is being strengthened during the country’s carnival season, which began in Les Cayes on Sunday.

The news came on the same day that President Martelly’s motorcade was attacked during a visit near the University of Haiti.
