This Caribbean Island Is Home to one of the Region’s Oldest Carnival Celebrations
It’s one of the oldest Carnival celebrations in the Caribbean: Mas Domnik, the legendary series of fetes that dates back to the 18th century.
And if you’re planning to visit, the island is readying for an action-packed schedule from Jan. 18 to March 5, 2025.
Officials say next year will be the “most exciting yet,” with a mix of authentic cultural experience and endless parties.
Dominica’s Carnival has deep historical routes in the masquerade traditions of formerly enslaved African people. Since then, it’s become a vibrant, dynamic festival that blends African, French, Kalinago and European inspirations, from music to dance to bustling street parades.
The event begins Jan. 18, with other key events including the Miss Dominica Pageant on Feb. 27, Carnival Monday and Tuesday on March 3-4 and the Téwé Vaval on March 5.
They’re part of a cornucopia of more than 40 events during the period.
“This celebration of freedom and cultural pride unites communities in joyous festivities,” Dominica Tourism said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
If you’re heading from the US, the best option is to fly on either American Airlines or the new Newark-Dominica service on United.
Where to stay? The best hotels on the island are the Secret Bay resort and the InterContinental Dominica. If you want to stay closer to the capital, the transformed Fort Young Hotel is a lovely, historic, complete property, one we’ve loved every time we’ve stayed there.
