5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Trinidad and Tobago, Southern Caribbean

The biggest earthquake in the Caribbean in several years caused shaking across the Southern Caribbean on Tuesday evening.

The 5.8-magnitude quake’s epicenter was about 25 miles southwest of Scarborough, Tobago; it struck at about 5:42 PM local time at a depth of 35km.

Shaking was felt across much of the southern Caribbean, including in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada (there were also reports of shaking in Venezuela.

The strongest reports of shaking were in Trinidad, including in Port of Spain, with “moderate” strength, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The Caribbean region is seismically active, although the most frequent earthquakes tend to fall in the 3.0-4.0 range on the Richter scale.

There were not yet reports of damage or injuries resulting from the quake.
