American Airlines Is Launching Its First-Ever Flights to Puerto Escondido, Mexico’s Hidden-Gem Surf Town

By: Caitlin Sullivan - April 11, 2025 - 10:28 am

One that just so happens to be tucked away in Mexico’s culinary capital. Think of it somewhere halfway between Rincon, Puerto Rico and Tulum, with a vibrant, peculiar vibe that has made it one of the best-kept secrets in the country for years.

But the secret is getting out. This is Puerto Escondido, and it’s suddenly on the travel radar.

The newest development? American Airlines’ first-ever flights to the city, which will kick off on Dec. 3.

American Airlines will be flying twice per week between its hub in Dallas-Fort Worth and Puerto Escondido, with service on Wednesday and Saturday, it confirmed this week.

American will be using its Embraer 175 aircraft on the route, something it has been doing more and more to connect travelers to harder-to-reach destinations in the Caribbean-Mexico region (places like Dominica, Tortola’s Beef Island and Anguilla, among others).

American’s new flight will launch after another high-profile flight to Puerto Escondido on United, which announced its entry to the market last fall and will be running weekly flights out of another Texas source city, Houston, as we reported. That flight is starting in May.

Yes, Mexico has some great surf towns, but so does the Caribbean. Whether it’s Bathsheba, Barbados (the home of the world-famous Soup Bowl), the aforementioned Rincon on the west coast of Puerto Rico (which just got its own new flight) or the super-cool town of Tartane in Martinique, the region is filled with great options for hanging 10.
