Jamaica Spending $36 Million to Boost Pharmaceutical Drug Supply

The Jamaican government is spending approximately $35.5 million on a two-year supply of pharmaceutical drugs, including those required to treat chronic illnesses like hypertension.

The amount is being spent through 28 counteracts with 28 local and international suppliers, Information Minister Sen. Sandrea Falconer said Wednesday.

The pharmaceuticals purchased cover a total of 690 items, both branded and generic, for government hospitals and health centres, according to Marcia Chin See, director of the National Health Fund’s Pharmaceutical Division.

Chin See said the purchases would save a claimed amount of $3.8 million.
