Mexico’s new Ambassador to Guyana, Francisco Olguin, is set to arrive in the country next week, according to President Donald Ramotar.

Ramotar bid farewell to outgoing Ambassador Fernando Sandoval, who described his two-year tenure as “challenging and exciting.”

Sandoval was Mexico’s first ambassador to Guyana.

“I hope that [cooperation] can continue,” he said. “I made my best effort in the construction of the relationship between Guyana and Mexico and since I was the first ambassador, I was a pioneer here,” he said.

In September, Guyana and Mexico signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at establishing a mechanism to focus on all aspects of relations between the countries.

While Mexico and Guyana have had diplomatic ties since 1973, it was not until 2009 that Mexico opened an embassy in the country.
