Why This Oceanfront Hotel in Panama’s Historic Quarter Is Our Favorite in the Country
Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo combines grand rooms, Pacific-facing balconies and a waterfront pool with an address in Panama City’s most compelling neighborhood. We’ve stayed there, and we loved it.
You can spend the morning walking the streets of Casco Viejo, stopping for coffee, stepping into a church, finding another little plaza. Then you can spend the afternoon beside a waterfront pool, looking across the Pacific toward Panama City’s skyline.
Both are part of the same hotel stay.
That’s the first reason we love Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. The hotel puts you inside the capital’s historic quarter, directly on the water, with the rooms, dining and amenities to make the hotel itself a substantial part of your vacation.
We’ve stayed here, and we loved it. When we’re asked to choose the best hotel in Panama, this is our pick.
We covered its opening in 2023. A stay gives you a better understanding of just how much that waterfront address contributes to the experience.
You’re Staying in Casco Viejo
The neighborhood is a major part of the decision.
Casco Viejo is where you can spend hours exploring Panama City on foot: brick streets, historic churches, galleries, restaurants and plazas lined with places to sit down for a drink. Staying here means you can head out without a complicated itinerary, return to your room and go back out for dinner.
Sofitel Legend occupies a particularly enviable position within the UNESCO-listed district. The historic streets are outside the entrance, while the waterfront side opens toward the Pacific and the modern city across the bay. The Church of San José, known for its golden altar, is among the nearby sights.
That gives you two very different ways to spend the day. You can devote your time to the neighborhood or settle into the hotel, with very little planning required to move between them.
For a first visit to Panama City, we would start here. On a return visit, the location is just as persuasive.
The Grand Hotel Treatment
The property’s history begins with the Union Club, which opened in 1917. Its waterfront address once hosted the city’s social gatherings and prominent international visitors. Today, that heritage provides the foundation for Sofitel Legend’s grand hotel character.
The facade, traditional furnishings and dark woods suit the surrounding architecture. Inside, the French influence of Sofitel sits alongside Panamanian art and local references.
There’s a sense of occasion to staying here. You can dress for dinner, head downstairs for a drink and spend the evening within the hotel. You can also return from a hot morning of sightseeing, change into a swimsuit and head straight for the pool.
That flexibility is one of its strongest qualities. The hotel has the formality for a special occasion and the facilities for a relaxed, several-night vacation.
Choose Your Room Carefully
There are 159 rooms and suites, with views of the courtyard, the historic district or the ocean. Balcony configurations vary, from Juliet balconies to larger outdoor spaces with seating.
Our recommendation is to prioritize an oceanfront room with a furnished balcony.
The Magnifique Oceanfront category offers approximately 646 square feet and a king bed. An Oceanfront Junior Suite provides approximately 861 square feet, including an L-shaped balcony with a sitting area. You have a generous amount of room to spread out, particularly for a city hotel.
The interiors have a traditional elegance: herringbone floors, dark wood four-poster beds and bronze accents, with practical comforts including blackout curtains and French press coffee makers.
The outdoor space deserves particular attention when booking. A balcony large enough for sitting gives you another place to spend time between outings. You can have coffee overlooking the bay before breakfast or read outside before getting ready for dinner.
Check the individual room description for the view and balcony type. Those details are worth choosing deliberately.
An Afternoon Beside the Pacific
The waterfront pool is one of the biggest reasons to leave time in your schedule for the hotel.
The deck faces the ocean, with loungers overlooking the water. After a morning walking through Casco Viejo, you can come back upstairs, change and spend the afternoon swimming. The property also has a spa and fitness center. We would resist filling every day with activities. Panama City has plenty to see, but part of choosing this hotel is giving yourself time to enjoy what’s downstairs.
Plan an early outing, have lunch, then return for a few hours by the pool. You’ll still have the evening ahead for another walk through the neighborhood or dinner at the hotel.
Make Time for Caleta and Ammi
Caleta, the signature restaurant, pairs a Parisian brasserie interior with a Panama-focused menu. Its sourcing includes ingredients from Chiriquí and other parts of the country, giving dinner a connection to the destination beyond the waterfront view.
Ammi Skybar & Grill adds an elevated vantage point for cocktails and views across the city. Café Vera offers coffee and pastries, while Mayda provides another place for drinks within the property.
You should explore Casco Viejo’s restaurants during your stay. We would also reserve at least one evening for the hotel’s own dining and bars.
Why We’d Go Back
Sofitel Legend brings together the things we want from a Panama City hotel: a neighborhood worth exploring, an oceanfront address, spacious rooms and somewhere to spend an unhurried afternoon.
We’ve stayed here. We loved it. And we would happily return.
Give it at least three nights, choose an oceanfront balcony and leave some of your calendar empty. Casco Viejo is right outside, and the pool is waiting when you get back.
