This Ritz-Carlton Reserve Is Our Pick for Puerto Rico’s Best Luxury Resort — With Private Plunge Pools Right Outside Your Room

Dorado Beach.

At Dorado Beach, the rooms we love most put a private pool between you and the ocean, with outdoor showers, generous terraces and very little reason to rush anywhere.

Your swimsuit can stay on all afternoon. There’s a book waiting on the terrace, the ocean beyond it, and a private plunge pool close enough that a swim requires almost no decision at all. You can spend an hour here, go inside for a while, then come back out and do it again.

This is the part of Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve that we particularly love: the plunge-pool rooms, where the outdoor space becomes somewhere you spend a substantial part of your vacation.

We think this is the best luxury resort in Puerto Rico. The beachfront setting, Spa Botánico and personal service make a persuasive case. But when we think about the room we’d choose, and the experience we most want from a stay here, we keep returning to that private pool.

The Room Category We’d Choose

Dorado Beach has several accommodation categories, and choosing carefully makes a considerable difference to your stay. Our preference is a room explicitly designated with a plunge pool.

The East Beach Plunge category pairs a king bed and sofa bed with an oceanfront, ground-floor setting. West Beach Plunge rooms have a king bed and sofa bed in a beachfront, ground-floor location. There’s also a Plunge Reserve category with two king beds, a useful option when you want additional sleeping space along with your own pool.

These are specific categories within the resort’s inventory. Other rooms have balconies, and certain suites offer private pools and more extensive living space. Check the full room description when reserving, particularly if the pool is the reason you’re choosing Dorado Beach.

We’d make it the priority. A private plunge pool gives you somewhere to swim before getting dressed for breakfast, cool off after a beach walk or spend the stretch of afternoon when you’re happiest staying close to your room.

A Terrace You’ll Actually Use

We’ve long loved Caribbean resorts with private plunge-pool rooms, and Dorado Beach captures much of what makes them so desirable. You have water, outdoor living space and the freedom to move between swimming and lounging whenever you feel like it.

The oceanfront setting adds another dimension. You can enjoy the privacy of your own pool while keeping the shoreline in view. A beach walk can be part of the afternoon without becoming an outing that requires you to gather everything you’ll need for several hours.

Dorado Beach’s accommodations also emphasize open-air showers, natural colors and personal attention from an Embajador, the resort’s dedicated guest-service role. Together, these details make spending time in the room a central pleasure of the trip.

You can give the afternoon over to a book, order something to eat and take another dip before dinner. The room deserves time on your itinerary.

The Rest of Dorado Beach

The wider resort gives you plenty of reasons to head out, beginning with the coastline. Located in Dorado, west of San Juan, the property puts you in a beach setting with access to golf, shared pools and outdoor activities.

Our Dorado Beach coverage has followed the property through its evolution, and its position among Puerto Rico’s leading resorts comes from the combination of accommodations and experiences available within a single stay.

You might spend one morning at the beach and another playing golf. You can arrange a treatment, linger over lunch or leave an afternoon open. The resort has enough variety for a longer visit, especially when you’re happy to spend substantial time enjoying the room you selected.

Spa Botánico and Dinner by the Water

Spa Botánico deserves a place on that schedule. Its gardens, shaded treatment spaces and treetop settings extend the resort’s emphasis on spending time outdoors. The apothecary, filled with herbs and flowers, introduces a spa experience closely connected to its surroundings.

Dining gives the evening its own destinations. COA centers on cooking from a custom wood-fired oven, with seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and purveyors. Posi+ivo Sand Bar combines Asian and Latin influences in a beachfront setting, while La Cocina Gourmet offers Puerto Rican coffee, gelato and food to take away.

COA Lounge adds cocktails, rum and sunset views. You can choose a leisurely restaurant dinner after an afternoon by your pool, with enough variety to give successive evenings their own character.

Leave Some Time After Sunset

We’ve also reported on Dorado Beach’s after-dark nature experiences, including its coquí programming. Exploring the grounds after sunset introduces another side of the setting, when Puerto Rico’s tiny tree frogs become part of the evening soundtrack.

It’s a worthwhile addition to a stay that could otherwise revolve quite happily around the beach, the spa and dinner. Ask the resort about the experiences available during your dates.

Why It’s Our Pick

Dorado Beach brings together the elements we want in a luxury resort: a strong sense of its location, thoughtful outdoor space, personal attention and enough to enjoy without filling every hour.

The plunge-pool rooms are our favorite expression of it. You have your own place to swim, a terrace worth lingering on and the ocean close by throughout the day.

Book one of those rooms, and leave yourself an afternoon to enjoy it. A swim, a little reading and another swim before dinner can become the part of Puerto Rico you spend the longest remembering.
