Open the terrace door and the pool is already there, a few feet from the bed, surrounded by tropical gardens or facing a beach, a volcano or a pair of volcanic peaks.

You leave your book on the lounger. You order lunch to the room. You swim before dinner. There is no hunt for an empty chair and no reason to claim a spot beside the main pool.

The private plunge pool has become one of the most desirable features in Caribbean hotels, particularly at romantic resorts where the room itself can occupy a large part of your vacation. Antigua has an extraordinary concentration of them, while Saint Lucia, Grenada, Curaçao, Dominica, Turks and Caicos and the Mexican Caribbean offer their own versions.

Look farther across the Caribbean basin and you find another take in Costa Rica, where private pools overlook rainforest and Arenal Volcano.

Here are some of our favorites.

This takes the private-pool idea a step further because your room is already an overwater bungalow. The terrace has its own 151-square-foot infinity plunge pool, and just beyond it, steps lead directly down into the Caribbean. You can swim in your own pool, climb out, then be in the sea a few seconds later.

The overwater villas also have outdoor showers, partial glass floors and broad decks above the water, with butler service included. There are 14 overwater villas, including two larger Princess Overwater Villas. It is one of the most complete private-water experiences in the region: your own plunge pool on an overwater bungalow, with the Caribbean directly beneath you.
