These 7 Caribbean Beach Bars Come With Their Own Hotels, So You Never Have to Leave
Seven Caribbean beach bars let you turn the afternoon into an overnight stay, from Soggy Dollar on White Bay and Saba Rock in the BVI to Grabbers in Abaco, with the fall season bringing several of them back into prime vacation territory.
Seven places, seven very different versions of the same Caribbean idea: the beach bar is also where you stay. Saba Rock is an entire 1-acre island with 9 rooms and suites in the BVI, while Grabbers Bed, Bar & Grille has newly renovated accommodations beside its sunset-facing bar on Great Guana Cay.
The list stretches from Karibuni Boutique Hotel and its offshore restaurant on Pinel Island to Big Bamboo and Cow Wreck Beach on Anegada, along with two very different White Bay experiences on Jost Van Dyke. Soggy Dollar and Sandcastle Hotel began their seasonal closure Aug. 26 and are scheduled to reopen Oct. 7, putting the return of one of the Caribbean’s defining beach-bar stays squarely on the fall calendar.
These are places where the bar isn’t a secondary resort amenity. It’s one of the central reasons to make the trip.
Why These Beach-Bar Stays Work
A great Caribbean beach bar normally presents one problem: eventually, you have to leave. A hotel connected to the bar removes the deadline and gives you something entirely different from a day trip.
The formula changes from island to island. At Saba Rock, the resort and bar occupy the same tiny cay; at Karibuni, a private boat connects the hotel to its Pinel Island restaurant; at Hendo’s, a 7-villa resort with plunge pools places you beside White Bay.
The geography helps, too. Several of these places are in the British Virgin Islands, where American’s nonstop Miami-Tortola route puts the territory about 2 hours and 55 minutes from Miami before the final ferry or boat ride to places like Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Anegada.
Soggy Dollar and Sandcastle Hotel, Jost Van Dyke, BVI
White Bay is the natural starting point. Soggy Dollar Bar and the adjoining Sandcastle Hotel turn one of the Caribbean’s most famous drinking spots into a complete stay, with the rooms only steps from the place where the Painkiller was created.
Sandcastle has just 6 accommodations: two beachfront cottages, two garden cottages and two garden-view rooms. The scale is tiny, which is exactly why staying here feels so different from arriving on a boat, ordering a Painkiller and leaving a few hours later.
The property’s seasonal calendar is worth knowing right now. Soggy Dollar closed Aug. 26 and lists Oct. 7 as its reopening date, while the hotel says its upcoming season is already close to sold out.
There is no marina at Soggy Dollar, a detail that helped create the bar’s name: boaters historically swam ashore with cash getting wet along the way. Staying at Sandcastle replaces the swim back to the boat with a short walk to your room.
