This Oceanfront Bonaire Hotel Has a Private Pier, a House Reef and a New General Manager

Bonaire’s boutique hotel scene has always had a distinctive character: smaller places, an intimate connection to the sea and a hotel experience often built around diving, snorkeling and long stays on the island. One of its best-known boutique properties, Bellafonte Bonaire, now has a new leader.

The 22-unit oceanfront hotel has named Britt Thomassen its new general manager, bringing in a hospitality executive with experience at Belnem House Bonaire. Thomassen takes over a property whose signature features include its private pier and immediate entry into Bonaire’s celebrated reef system, home to some 60 varieties of coral.

The appointment follows the departure of longtime general manager Carlijn Verf, whom the hotel credited with helping develop Bellafonte during the last several years. Thomassen most recently served as operations manager at Belnem House, where she was involved in the property’s development and daily operations beginning with its opening.

A New General Manager for Bellafonte

The news is significant in a destination where boutique hotels remain a major part of the accommodation mix.

Bonaire has added new hotel brands and larger resorts in recent years, but properties like Bellafonte continue to offer a different kind of stay: small, residential and closely connected to the island itself. Bellafonte’s accommodations are apartment-style, and the hotel has long centered much of the experience around the water directly outside the property.

The hotel’s pier has become one of its defining features, with a ladder leading directly into the water and space above for lounging between swims, snorkeling outings and dives.

Thomassen will now oversee that experience.

“I am incredibly excited to become part of the team at The Bellafonte,” Thomassen said.

She said she was looking forward to working with Bellafonte’s team and building on the hotel’s existing reputation, with a continued emphasis on the guest experience.

Experience on Bonaire

Thomassen arrives with the advantage of already knowing both the island and its hotel market.

Her most recent role was at Belnem House Bonaire, where she served as operations manager. She was involved with the property from its opening, according to Bellafonte, giving her experience with both the launch of a Bonaire hotel and the day-to-day demands of operating one.

Local experience can be especially valuable in Bonaire, where many hotel stays are built around activities that require more coordination than the traditional resort vacation.

Divers may be arranging tanks, equipment, shore-diving days and boat trips. Snorkelers are often planning stops around the island’s marine sites, while many visitors rent vehicles and build their stays around Kralendijk, Lac Bay, Washington Slagbaai National Park and Bonaire’s famous shore-dive circuit.

The island’s tourism profile continues to reflect the importance of the water.

Diving remains one of the primary reasons Americans were visiting Bonaire, with 40.3 percent of U.S. visitors in June identifying diving as their main purpose for traveling to the island. Hotels accounted for 58.6 percent of American stays during the same month, according to Bonaire’s latest tourism data.

The island’s dive culture is unusually independent, too. Many of Bonaire’s best-known dive sites are reached directly from land, a tradition so central to the destination that Buddy Dive recently introduced an entire course devoted to Bonaire shore diving.

Bellafonte fits naturally into the same world.

You don’t have to leave the hotel to reach the reef. The private pier gives swimmers, snorkelers and divers a direct route into the sea, while the apartment-style accommodations make the property especially well suited to longer Bonaire stays.

What the Change Means for the Hotel

Bellafonte said Thomassen’s arrival would continue the hotel’s emphasis on personalized hospitality and quality.

The transition also marks the end of Verf’s tenure at the property. Bellafonte thanked its outgoing general manager for her contribution over the last several years and credited her leadership with helping develop the hotel into the property it is today.

The company did not disclose where Verf is headed next, describing it only as a new role.

Leadership changes at small hotels can have an outsized effect because the general manager is often closely involved in nearly every part of the stay. Bellafonte’s size gives Thomassen a property where hotel operations are necessarily personal, from arrivals and housekeeping to concierge service and the daily rhythms surrounding the pier.

There is also a strong base to build from.

The appeal begins with the location along the water south of Kralendijk and extends to accommodations designed more like seaside residences than traditional hotel rooms.

Bellafonte’s 22 accommodations are seaside apartment units, all oriented toward the water. The property also offers daily housekeeping, concierge services and night security, along with facilities geared toward diving.

Its location adds another advantage.

Bellafonte is close enough to Kralendijk to make the island’s restaurants and downtown attractions easy to reach, while its oceanfront setting offers the kind of immediate marine experience that has made Bonaire famous.

Why Bonaire Is Different

A hotel change on Bonaire is inevitably tied to what is happening across the destination.

The Dutch Caribbean island has spent the last several years attracting increased attention from the United States while retaining its traditionally strong Dutch visitor base. New air service has helped, including nonstop JetBlue flights from New York, along with service from major U.S. gateways including Miami, Atlanta and Houston.

Hotels have expanded along with that interest, ranging from dedicated dive resorts to beachfront properties and small boutique stays.

Bellafonte occupies its own niche within the market. It does not depend on a large beach, a sprawling resort campus or a long roster of resort amenities to define the stay.

The sea is the amenity.

Bonaire National Marine Park begins at the waterline, meaning the protected marine environment is immediately present when you step off Bellafonte’s pier. The marine park surrounds Bonaire and Klein Bonaire, protecting coral, seagrass, mangroves and marine life across one of the Caribbean’s most famous underwater ecosystems.

A stay can therefore be remarkably simple.

You can spend the day exploring the island, return to your apartment and still have time for another snorkel directly from the hotel. Divers can enter a reef system almost outside their door, while non-divers can use the pier as a place to swim, snorkel or simply spend time beside Bonaire’s famously clear water.

Who Bellafonte Is Right For

Bellafonte works particularly well if you want a smaller Bonaire hotel and value independence over an all-inclusive resort experience.

The apartment-style accommodations make sense for longer stays and for visitors who want more of a residential feel, while the location puts Kralendijk and the southern part of the island within convenient reach. Divers and snorkelers have the added benefit of direct water entry from the hotel itself.

Couples looking for a quieter base can take advantage of the same qualities even if diving isn’t part of the trip.

The private pier is as useful for an afternoon swim as it is for a dive, and Bonaire’s appeal has increasingly extended beyond scuba to food, windsurfing, nature and the island’s distinctive desert landscape.

It’s also a useful alternative to Bonaire’s larger beachfront hotels.

Choosing Bellafonte means choosing a small hotel where the emphasis is on apartment-style accommodations, the ocean and personal service. If your ideal Bonaire trip revolves around a broad resort program, multiple restaurants and a traditional sandy beach, another property may be a better match.
