Puerto Rico Is Getting New Daily Holiday Flights From Dallas, Houston, and Cleveland

The blue cobblestones of Old San Juan, the kiosks and beaches of Piñones, an afternoon under the palms at Escambrón. Puerto Rico packs an unusual amount into a long weekend, and getting there from the mainland is about to get easier for travelers in three major U.S. markets.

Frontier Airlines is adding seasonal daily flights to San Juan from Dallas, Houston, and Cleveland for the holiday season, bringing thousands of additional seats into Puerto Rico during one of the island’s busiest travel periods.

The service is especially welcome right now. Passenger traffic at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport has softened after several years of rapid growth. Through April, the airport had handled about 11.1 million passengers for the fiscal year to date, down about one percent from the same period a year earlier. Eight of the 10 reported months from July through April were below their year-earlier totals.

Now Frontier is putting more seats into San Juan precisely when Puerto Rico needs another airlift boost.

Three Seasonal Routes and More Than 15,000 Seats

The new Frontier service will connect Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport with Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Frontier will use Airbus A320neo aircraft configured for 186 passengers on the flights.

According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the three routes will add 15,624 seats to Puerto Rico’s air inventory and are expected to contribute about $10.4 million to the local economy.

The Dallas-Fort Worth service will operate from Nov. 20 through Jan. 4, giving North Texas travelers a nonstop option that spans Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

Flights from Houston and Cleveland will run from Dec. 17 through Jan. 4, concentrating the additional capacity around the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

The dates make these routes unusually focused pieces of seasonal airlift: Frontier is putting extra aircraft into San Juan when winter demand from the mainland traditionally accelerates and Puerto Ricans living in Texas and Ohio are traveling home to see family.

San Juan’s Passenger Numbers Have Been Cooling

The expansion arrives against a different aviation backdrop than Puerto Rico saw during the immediate post-pandemic travel boom.

Passenger totals at Luis Muñoz Marín had been setting records as airlines poured capacity into the market. More recently, the numbers have cooled.

Puerto Rico Tourism Company data show 1.38 million passengers in July, down two percent year over year. August rose five percent and September increased two percent, but October slipped two percent.

The declines continued through much of the winter: November was down three percent, December was down four percent, and January, February, March, and April were each down two percent year over year.

Through April, Luis Muñoz Marín had recorded 11,132,732 passengers, compared with 11,299,439 during the comparable prior-year period.

The difference is relatively modest in percentage terms, but the run of monthly declines is notable for an airport coming off several years of strong gains.

Puerto Rico then faced another air-service challenge in May when Spirit Airlines ended its operations to the island, affecting nine routes. Other carriers already serve those city pairs, and Puerto Rico tourism officials said at the time they were working with airline partners to preserve available capacity.

Frontier’s holiday additions now put fresh seats back into the market from three large metropolitan areas.

Dallas Gets the Longest Run

The Dallas-Fort Worth flight may be the most consequential of the three from a trip-planning perspective.

Service begins Nov. 20, nearly a month ahead of the Houston and Cleveland flights, and continues through Jan. 4.

It also links San Juan with one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States and gives travelers another choice in a market already served by American Airlines.

A nonstop makes a Puerto Rico trip especially easy because U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to visit the island. You land at Luis Muñoz Marín and can be in Condado, Isla Verde, Ocean Park, or Old San Juan shortly afterward.

A four-night trip can include beach time in Isla Verde, a night walking Calle San Sebastián, mofongo and cocktails in Old San Juan, and a day outside the capital.

And because the Frontier flight covers both Thanksgiving and the year-end holidays, it opens several different vacation windows.

Houston Adds Another Texas Option

Houston is another important market for Puerto Rico.

Frontier’s flight from George Bush Intercontinental Airport will operate daily between Dec. 17 and Jan. 4, adding capacity during the heart of the holiday period.

Texas has a substantial Puerto Rican population, and Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel specifically pointed to the ability of Puerto Ricans living in Texas and Ohio to use the additional flights for holiday visits with family.

Houston also brings a huge base of leisure travelers within nonstop range of San Juan.

Puerto Rico is particularly well suited to a short Caribbean trip from a major mainland gateway. There’s no immigration process for U.S. citizens, the U.S. dollar is the currency, and San Juan gives you a Caribbean beach trip and a historic city in the same destination.

You can spend one afternoon on Isla Verde Beach, another walking the forts and streets of Old San Juan, then rent a car for a day trip toward El Yunque National Forest, Luquillo, or the northeastern coast.

Cleveland Gets a Holiday Nonstop

The Cleveland service creates a particularly useful winter option for travelers in Northeast Ohio.

Frontier will fly daily between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and San Juan from Dec. 17 through Jan. 4.

Those dates cover the period when escaping Ohio for Puerto Rico requires very little persuasion.

You arrive in San Juan to beaches, outdoor restaurants, historic plazas and temperatures made for spending most of the trip outside. The geographic contrast is immediate, and the nonstop turns Puerto Rico into a straightforward long-weekend or weeklong holiday trip.

Frontier has served Cleveland-San Juan before, so the route also marks a seasonal return to a city pair already familiar to the airline.

Frontier Already Has a Large Puerto Rico Presence

Frontier has become one of the more active low-cost airlines in Puerto Rico over the last several years.

The carrier operates domestic routes to San Juan from cities across the eastern and southeastern United States, along with international service between Punta Cana and San Juan.

It also serves Ponce from Orlando, extending its Puerto Rico network beyond the capital.

The three holiday flights deepen that relationship during an important period for the island’s tourism sector.

Puerto Rico has been working aggressively to add and retain air service while carriers adjust their domestic networks. Southwest has also expanded its Puerto Rico flying, while tourism officials have pursued additional service at Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla and Mercedita International Airport in Ponce.

The Frontier announcement is focused squarely on San Juan, where even a relatively small year-over-year passenger decline translates into a meaningful number of seats.

What You Can Do With a Holiday Trip to San Juan

The strongest part of San Juan as a winter destination is how quickly you can start the trip.

Stay in Condado and you have the beach, restaurants and the Condado Lagoon nearby. Choose Isla Verde and you’re even closer to the airport, with a wide beach and a long row of hotels along the sand.

Old San Juan gives you something entirely different.

Walk Calle Fortaleza and Calle del Cristo, head toward Castillo San Felipe del Morro, stop in the plazas and spend an evening hopping between bars along the old city streets. San Juan has enough restaurants, cocktail bars, museums and historic sites to fill several days before you even consider leaving the capital.

Then there’s the rest of Puerto Rico.

El Yunque National Forest is an easy day trip east of San Juan. Luquillo pairs a broad beach with its famous line of kiosks. Keep heading east and you reach Fajardo and the ferry routes toward Vieques and Culebra.

If you have more time, rent a car and head west toward Rincón, Aguadilla, Isabela, or Cabo Rojo.

A nonstop flight into San Juan can become almost any kind of Puerto Rico vacation you want.

A Needed Holiday Boost for Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico remains one of the Caribbean’s largest aviation markets, and more than 11 million fiscal-year passengers through April hardly suggests an airport in distress.

The recent direction has still been softer.

Monthly passenger totals at Luis Muñoz Marín were below their previous-year figures through much of the fall and winter, followed by Spirit’s departure from Puerto Rico in May. Airlines adding seats into San Juan therefore carry more weight than they did when virtually every monthly airport report seemed to bring another record.

Frontier’s new flights are short seasonal runs, but 15,624 additional seats arriving around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s give San Juan additional capacity exactly when hotels, restaurants, tour operators and local businesses are preparing for peak winter demand.

Travelers in Dallas will get the first opportunity beginning Nov. 20. Houston and Cleveland follow Dec. 17.

And after several months of softer passenger numbers at Puerto Rico’s busiest airport, three more daily holiday links to the mainland are a welcome addition to San Juan’s winter.
