Frontier Airlines has launched a new nonstop route connecting San Juan, Puerto Rico and the U.S. capital.

The ultra-low-cost carrier officially began service Thursday between Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, part of a broader expansion of the airline’s Caribbean footprint.

The new flights operate three times each week, with introductory fares starting at $99.

The addition brings Frontier’s total number of nonstop routes from Puerto Rico to 24, underscoring the airline’s growing presence on the island.

“These new routes to Miami and Washington Dulles from Puerto Rico will mean more ultra-low cost travel options for tourists looking to visit the island, as well as for residents traveling to the mainland U.S.,” said Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operations design at Frontier Airlines. “We are redefining ultra-low cost air travel, providing more comfort and convenience without compromising the affordability we’re known for.”

The new Dulles service is the latest in a series of recent airlift additions that have helped position San Juan as one of the fastest-growing airports in the Caribbean.

That includes a major push by Frontier, which has a new crew base in San Juan and has been positioning itself as a major Caribbean player out of Puerto Rico.
