In the Dominican Republic, “The Closest Thing to Sinatra Himself”

It was 1982, and the 5,000-seat amphitheater at the Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo resort had just been built. And when it came to a grand opening, there was simply one name that could do the job: Frank Sinatra.

Ol’ Blue Eyes headlined the Concert of the Americas back in 1982, and now the legendary crooner’s historic performance is getting a tribute, in time for the 50th anniversary of the resort.

This weekend, Michael Martocci, who is actually Sinatra’s godson, will be performing and recreating the concert, held in the same location at the Altos de Chavon amphitheater.

Martocci is so good that Sinatra’s own manager said seeing him perform was “teh closet thing to seeing Frank Sinatra himself perform.”

Martocci will perform at 9:30 on March 1.

“He grew up with the Sinatra family,” says Jason Kycek, CMO of Hospitality, Tourism and Real Estate at Central Romana Corporation, tells Caribbean Journal.

The performance is part of a host of Sinatra-inspired events this weekend, including some Sinatra memorabilia and other Rat Pack performances.

The weekend concludes with a Sinatra Jazz Brunch.

You can find last minute tickets here.

Even better? It’s never been easier to visit Casa de Campo, thanks to American Airlines’ new nonstop flights from Miami to La Romana, whose airport is literally on the grounds of the resort. That means you land, get through customs and just take a golf cart to the property.
