China Funds Housing for Carib Indians

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 4, 2011 - 8:10 pm

The Chinese government is funding a housing project in the Carib Territory of Dominica, with the first tranche of funds already release for the construction of 41 new homes.

Last year, the government of Dominica announced that it had offered to finance construction of the houses for indigenous people.

“The project has been approved and in fact, we have received about [$185,185] for commencement of the project,” said Housing Minister Reginald Austrie. “The sites have been identified but on some of the sites, there is a lot of infrastructural work to be done like in Gullet River, in St Cyr and in Sinkeu.”

Austrie said it was an extenuation to ongoing housing changes in the country’s Carib Territory.

“We believe that the Carib people should be singled out for special treatment and that is why the government is doing all in its power to ensure that the Carib people are treated as a special people in Dominica,” he said.
