Caribbean Postcard: Dreams of Paris in Saint Pierre, Martinique

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - January 9, 2013

It was once the “Little Paris of the Caribbean.” Saint Pierre, Martinique, at the end of the 19th century, was arguably the most cosmpolitan of all the cities of the Caribbean. That all changed, however, in 1902, when Martinique’s Mount Pelee volcano erupted, destroying 30,000 lives and almost the entire city. There are some ruins from the tragedy, but in the modern day, Saint Pierre has grown into one of the most charming towns in the region — a quintessential French village — replete with cafes and culture – on the Caribbean sea. With the news, first reported by Caribbean Journal, that American Airlines would be launching direct flights from Miami — it’s likely Saint Pierre will be returning to the map in a big way. — CJ
