The World Bank has named Galina Sotirova its new country manager for Jamaica, the organization announced.

Sotirova, who assumed duties July 1, has now moved to Kingston to begin a programme of engagements with the government, private sector, media and civil society.

Sotirova will be leading the World Bank’s day-to-day dialogue with Jamaica’s government, along with stakeholders and development partners.

“I am excited about serving in Jamaica at this critical time when the government is undertaking significant reforms and initiatives to lay stronger foundations for growth and address social and climate vulnerabilities in the country,” she said in a statement. “I hope to quickly settle in and build on my predecessor’s work to effectively implement the Jamaica Country Partnership Strategy, and continue engaging in a dynamic dialogue with government, civil society, private sector and all our development partners.”

A native of Bulgaria, Sotirova joined the World Bank in 1994. She most recently served as country operations advisor for the Caribbean.

“She brings to the position a good knowledge of Jamaica’s challenges and opportunities, managerial experience and leadership skills, as well as a track record of building productive relationships with clients and development partners to attain results and achieve shared goals,” said Jorge Familiar, World Bank Vice President for Latin America.

Sotirova succeeds Kathy Lalazarian in the post.
