The government of Suriname has approved the donation of around $185,185 USD to help St Lucia with relief efforts following last month’s devastating trough system.

The donation, announced in a diplomatic note from Suriname’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is being made available by the Central Bank of Suriname.

Suriname is also preparing the shipment of 10 20-foot containers carrying water and other supplies for communities in St Lucia.

The move follows a similar donation from the government of Guyana, the European Union and the United Kingdom.

In the note, Suriname expressed “regret” over the damage caused and the six people who were killed during the storms.

In a statement, St Lucia’s government said it sincerely thanked the government of Suriname and that it looked forward to the “continued assistance of the International Community, as work continues to restore normalcy to the island.”
