Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe received Brazilian Ambassador to Haiti Jose Luiz Machado e Costa at his private residence for talks this week.

The discussions, which focused on improving cooperation between Haiti and Brazil, also new legislative and municipal elections in Haiti, security, energy and education.

Brazil has pledged $1 million to support the planned elections, according to the Ambassador, who commended the Martelly-Lamothe government for its work on improving the Rule of Law and judicial reforms.

The latter was strengthened last week by the swearing-in of the members of the Supreme Council of Judicial Power.

Lamothe also spoke with the Brazilian envoy about Haiti’s desire to renew Brazilian scholarships for students in the country.

On the security front, Machado said Brazil was interested in supporting Haiti’s efforts to strengthen its national police force, particularly rural police and Haiti’s Rapid Response Unit.

Machado was officially accredited as Brazil’s Ambassador to Haiti by President Michel Martelly in May.
