Delta Air Lines Is Adding New Daily Flights to a Caribbean Island Famous For Beaches, Chocolate, and Spice

Some of the best beaches on earth. A unique, fragrant spice in the air. World-class rum. The Portofino of the Caribbean. A plethora of waterfalls. The Eastern Caribbean island of Grenada is one of the region’s great gems, a layered, rich getaway that still remains deliciously under the radar.
But that could be changing, thanks to a major new nonstop flight launching this winter on Delta Air Lines, Caribbean Journal has learned.
A New Connection from Atlanta
Delta is kicking off a significant new route from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Dec. 20, with daily nonstop service to Grenada’s Maurice Bishop International Airport. It’s a huge boost for the tourism fortunes of Grenada, a destination that has already been seeing strong growth in both its travel profile and its tourism numbers.
Grenada already has flights from major US carriers like JetBlue and American, and Canadian airlines such as Air Canada.
A Bit of Everything on the Spice Isle
It’s remarkable just how complex, how diverse a destination Grenada (which is actually three islands, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique); there’s something for every kind of vacation: a buzzing culinary scene; world-class chocolate; every manner of beach bar; spectacular beaches — some better known, others tucked away; a verdant rainforest; a thriving rum industry (including the lovely Clarke’s Court and the legendary River Antoine); and an endlessly friendly environment.
What I Love About Grenada
I’ve been traveling regularly to Grenada for more than a decade. What’s remarkable to me, even as a veteran of Caribbean travel, is how every time I travel to the island I discover a new layer, a new detail, whether it’s Grenada’s new, regional-leading push for sustainable tourism; or the almost-mystical beach at La Sagasse, one that has become one of my favorite stretches of sand in the Caribbean.
Where to Stay
Another way Grenada punches above its weight? Some wonderful, character-filled hotels, oozing with personality and authentic charm. That ranges from legendary resorts like the Spice Island Beach Resort to terrific-value beach hotels like the Radisson (I love the direct-beachfront rooms) right on Grand Anse Beach to the luxe boutique Calabash, another timeless retreat that is actually expanding with some new suites.
What the New Delta Flights Cost
The flight takes about four and a half hours. While it’s more during the festive season, in January the roundtrip fare dips to about $545 roundtrip, according to Google Flights.
