Marriott Just Opened a New Luxury Beach Hotel on a Tiny Island in Turks and Caicos

A few weeks ago, the tiny island of South Caicos was far off the travel radar, without any nonstop flights from, well, anywhere, an uncrowded destination with a little more than eight square miles of land mass.

Now, it’s smack-dab on the list of buzzy travel hotspots, with a brand-new American Airlines flight from Miami and a new hotel in Marriott’s Luxury Collection.

The new beach hotel is called Salterra, and it’s a 100-room, eco-focused luxury resort with six dining concepts and a destination spa. And it’s officially open for business, one of the most buzzed-about openings of the year so far in the Caribbean.

It’s the latter that’s the most exciting amenity, with a focus on salt that hearkens back to the island’s history of salt production. You’ll find everything from a salt sauna to a hammam to “salt bar” and body rituals. In a cool touch, the resort also has the option of what it calls “cabana treatments,” lighter spa treatments you can take while you’re at the pool. That includes things like a foot massage or a “wildflower refresh” facial. They start at about $75 per treatment.

South Caicos is a far-off, raw, pristine island.

The signature eatery is called Brine (again with the salt theme), with what the property calls “epicurean exploration” and an impressive wine list.

It’s also a family-friendly resort, with a Salterra Kids Club with daily programming for kids between the ages of 4 and 12. The schedule includes activities like “pirate coin hunts,” nature journaling, kids Zumba and coconut leaf origami.

It’s just the second Marriott-portfolio resort in Turks and Caicos, along with the Ritz-Carlton on Grace Bay Beach in Provo. (Rooms from $2,831 per night).

The destination spa has some cool treatment options.

So what about prices? Rates this month start at around $2,072 per night if you’re a Bonvoy member. That’s for a one-bedroom suite. For an oceanfront one-bedroom suite with a lanai, the price starts at $2,513 per night.

Flights from Miami start at $399 roundtrip in Basic Economy (which means you can’t ever change the ticket). The price goes up to $459 roundtrip in main cabin.
