Can Hyatt’s New Costa Rica Hotel Help Make San Jose Hip? 

Costa Rica’s hotel market has been quietly heating up in recent years, and now the country’s capital has a major new addition: the first-ever Hyatt Centric in Costa Rica, and the second Centric to debut in the Caribbeanean Basin this quarter (following the recent debut of the Hyatt Centric Santo Domingo). 

The new-build hotel is set in the Escazu neighborhood of San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, with 161 rooms set within a mixed-use development called Plaza Tempo. 

While San Jose has always been more of a gateway to the country’s rainforest and beach areas, the Centric is looking to change that — as more of a destination hotel for the capital — and it’s a hip, sleek entry to the city. 

So what’s inside? 

The aesthetic is modern, with a focus on local artwork; there are two dining concepts: Cense, a Costa Rican-focused eatery; and 19-49 Lounge Bar and Cafe, with sharable bites and snacks. There’s also room service available. 

There’s also more than 6,000 square feet of event space. 

San José has quietly been seeing an uptick in new hotels in recent years, beyond the Centric. That includes the very-cool Gran Hotel Costa Rica, which is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. 

It’s the latest addition for the Centric brand in the region, one that is clearly a focus for Hyatt.
