In Nassau, Celebrating Flamingos

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 24, 2024 - 2:58 pm

They’re right on the beach, staying in one of the Caribbean’s top luxury resorts.

They’re treated like royalty, with everything they need at any time. They even do yoga.

And while they’re not exactly guests at Nassau’s Baha Mar, they are VIPs.

The newest arrivals at the Baha Mar are a group of eight baby flamingos, the third generation of flamingos to call the resort home under the careful stewardship of the property’s on-site avian team.

Their eggs, delivered from the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, hatched earlier this month, and once they’re mature, they’ll join the Baha Mar’s existing flock of eight “Ambassador Flamingos.”

Every day they participate in everything from flamingo parades to flamingo yoga — along with thoughtful, intimate flamingo encounters.

“We are excited to welcome eight new flaminglets to our expanding flock, marking the third generation of Ambassador Flamingos at Baha Mar’s Flamingo Cay,” said Kristin Smith, Avian Curator and Chief Flamingo Officer. “Baha Mar’s distinctive Flamingo habitat was crafted to educate guests about these magnificent creatures and support their conservation. We couldn’t be prouder to introduce these newest members to the Baha Mar family.”

The resort works closely with the Bahamas National Trust to support flamingo research and preservation.

While flamingos are not considered endangered, they are a protected species species, and vital to many ecosystems in the wider Caribbean. That makes their preservation critical, the resort said.
