Avelo Airlines Launching First-Ever Flights to Montego Bay, Cancun

It was just over half a year ago that upstart carrier Avelo began its first-ever Caribbean service: nonstop flights connecting Puerto Rico with a city bereft of Caribbean flights: New Haven, Conn. 

Fast forward to the summer of 2024, and Avelo is at it again, with plans to launch its first ever “international” routes to the Caribbean. 

So where is the low-cost carrier going, and from where? 

Beginning in November, just in time for the peak winter travel season, Avelo is adding a pair of new flights from Connecticut — this time from Hartford. 

That will include new, twice-weekly service from Hartford to Cancun and twice-weekly flights from Hartford to Montego Bay, Jamaica — two of the region’s hottest travel destinations. 

The new Mobay (as locals call it) flights will launch on Nov. 16, with Cancun service slated to make its debut on Nov. 20. 

Avelo is actually adding another new Caribbean route from Florida’s Lakeland airport, with two weekly nonstop flights to Puerto Rico launching at the end of October. 

So what will the Montego Bay and Cancun flights cost? 

The company says service will begin with one-way fares as low as $52. 

It’s a “substantial” expansion for the carrier, which started operations three years ago, CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal. 

The flights are a sign of the growing importance of the New England market for the Caribbean, both Connecticut and nearby states like Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The latter will see a new Caribberan route this fall with JetBlue’s planned Providence-San Juan flights.
