St Maarten Has a New Underwater Sculpture Park

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 15, 2024 - 5:09 pm

If you are a diving and snorkeling enthusiast, you’re probably well aware that the Caribbean is home to a pair of underwater sculpture parks — unique attractions that create a thought-provoking, museum-style experience under the sea.

Now, the region is home to another one: the Under St Maarten Sculpture Park off the coast of Divi Little Bay in St Maarten.

The park is home to more than 300 different sculptures making up an artificial reef, with an exhibition set across four different “galleries.”

The sculptures “play a crucial role in creating a protected habitat for marine species to thrive,” according to Aqua Mania, which runs excursions to the site.

“Crafted from environmentally friendly materials, these sculptures seamlessly blend with and enhance the marine ecosystem providing sanctuaries for juvenile fish and encouraging the settlement of corals,” the company said.

If you’re taking a vacation to St Maarten, it’s easy to fit in one of the excursions, with twice-daily departures to the park, running at 11:30 AM and 2 PM.
