This Under-the-Radar Destination in The Bahamas Has Crystal-Clear Water, Incredible Diving, and Bungalows on the Beach
Cape Eleuthera pairs some of the country’s most compelling underwater terrain with a dive vacation you can spend on land, with short boat rides, waterfront villas, and long afternoons on the sand.
The reef has an edge. You follow its contours, watching the coral and the fish moving around it, until the bottom drops away and the water becomes a deeper blue. Along a wall, the view changes completely: reef beside you, open ocean beyond, and the possibility of a shark passing through.
It’s the kind of diving worth choosing an island around. In the southwestern corner of Eleuthera, Cape Eleuthera gives you another reason to make the trip: you can reach remarkable underwater terrain from a resort where the dive shop, marina, and accommodations share the same home base.
You come for the walls and reef sharks. You can spend the rest of the vacation in a beach bungalow, walking the shoreline and deciding what you want to dive tomorrow.
The Diving Is Close to the Dock
A great dive vacation depends on what happens between dives, too. Long transfers and lengthy boat rides can consume a surprising amount of a trip, particularly when you’re hoping to spend several consecutive days underwater.
Cape Eleuthera has a geographic advantage. The Dive Shop’s PADI listing describes nearby reefs, swim-throughs, coral nurseries, and wall diving, with sites as close as a seven-minute boat ride from the dock. The operation holds PADI Five Star Dive Resort status and welcomes both resort guests and divers staying elsewhere on the island.
Staying here puts your room and your departure point in the same place. You can organize the day around the diving, with time afterward to sit down for lunch, sort through photographs, or head to the beach.
The Wall Is a Reason to Come
The underwater geography gives this part of The Bahamas its strongest draw. PADI’s listing describes a wall stretching approximately 25 miles and descending more than 3,000 feet, an enormous underwater escarpment accessible from Cape Eleuthera. Your dive follows an appropriate section of that terrain, within the depth and conditions chosen by your guide.
Wall diving changes how you look at a reef. You can study the surface in front of you, then turn toward open water and take in the scale of the drop. Photographers have different perspectives to consider; experienced divers have a compelling reason to return for another section.
The broader menu includes reef dives, blue hole excursions, and wrecks. Before booking, discuss the sites you most want to visit with the shop, along with your certification, recent experience, and the conditions expected during your stay.
Sharks Are Part of the Trip
Cape Eleuthera’s signature offering is the Eleuthera Shark Dive, an encounter the operator presents with an emphasis on awareness, education, and conservation. Reef sharks also feature among the marine life associated with the area’s reef and wall diving, alongside turtles, rays, and tropical fish. Wildlife sightings vary from dive to dive.
A shark encounter gives you plenty to think about after you surface: how the animal moved, how it approached, how quickly it disappeared into the distance. Ask about the format of the excursion when reserving so you know what the experience involves.
Private dive charters are another option, particularly if your group shares a specific interest or you want to discuss a photography-focused outing.
You Can Stay Right on the Beach
We’ve covered Cape Eleuthera’s evolution as a dive resort, and the accommodations are a substantial part of the draw. A trip centered on diving can still have the comforts of a proper island vacation.
The Sunset Beach Bungalows sit directly on the beach, with private terraces and space for outdoor dining. They’re an especially good choice for a couple who wants to return from the boat, shower, and spend the afternoon close to the water. You get a room with a beach outside it and somewhere to sit while the day slows down.
The marina villas suit a different kind of stay. These two-bedroom accommodations have full kitchens and open-air patios overlooking the marina and Exuma Sound. Traveling with another couple or a family gives you a reason to consider the extra bedroom, shared living space, and ability to handle some meals yourself.
There’s a Vacation Above the Surface
Cape Eleuthera encompasses nearly 4,500 acres, with three private beaches and a pool. The marina gives the property another focal point, with boats coming and going alongside the resort stay.
We’ve also highlighted the Cape Eleuthera sandbar among our beach discoveries in The Bahamas. You have reasons to leave an afternoon open, particularly when someone in your group wants plenty of beach time alongside the underwater excursions.
Plan Your Arrival Around South Eleuthera
Rock Sound is the closest airport, approximately 30 minutes from the resort. Cape Eleuthera lists Makers Air service from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport to Rock Sound; check departures for your dates and arrange your ground transfer ahead of arrival. Governor’s Harbour is another arrival option, with a substantially longer drive south.
Choose Cape Eleuthera when you want diving to be the center of your Bahamas vacation. You have walls to explore, sharks to look for, and a beach waiting when you climb back onto the boat.
