It’s being called a “new chapter” for the popular Wyndham Grand Rio Mar resort in Puerto Rico, which is set for a large-scale makeover, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The resort, which recently rebranded as a “rainforest beach and golf resort,” is set in Rio Grande, home to a pair of PGA championship golf courses and two miles of golden beach.
Owner LionGrove is planning a multimillion-dollar overhaul of the property, one that will include a “full reconstruction” of all 400 rooms, 10 dining concepts, a new-look lobby and new nightlife options, among other additions.
“We are ushering in a new chapter for the resort,” said Amadeo Zarzosa, senior vice president of operations of LionGrove and general manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Beach & Golf Resort in a press release provided to Caribbean Journal. “We’re not just surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the rainforest and ocean; we’re integrating it into every aspect of the guest experience. The transformation of the resort will reinforce to both visitors and locals that something truly special is in Rio Grande.”
The project will be split over three phases, with the first set for December, adding a pair of new pools, one for adults and another of the zero-entry variety.
The next phase, set for January, will include new-look rooms and a new cafe.
The last phase, scheduled for the fall of next year, will add a trio of new dining concepts, along with a new kids club and a new racquet center.
“Puerto Rico continues a period of very exciting growth with record-setting levels of visitor arrivals coming to enjoy the incredible culture, ecology, and social scene that a world-class setting and resort like ours can offer,” said Andro Nodarse-León, founder and CEO of LionGrove. “This investment reflects our commitment to our team members and to the ongoing growth of Puerto Rico and our surrounding local community. We look forward to welcoming returning and new visitors from around the globe to our incredible resort.”
CJ Expert Take: Puerto Rico doesn’t have a ton of resorts as complete as this one, which has an impressive slate of amenities even if it is a bit remote. The golf offering is one of the best on the island, and the beach is spectacular.
