Southwest Airlines Is Launching New Nonstop Flights to The Bahamas

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 15, 2024 - 12:06 pm

It’s one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean right now: Nassau Paradise Island, home of some of the region’s most iconic resorts, most beautiful beaches and most vibrant culinary scenes.

And next month, it’s about to get even easier to fly there.

Low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines is set to kick off a brand new nonstop route between Orlando and Nassau, with service officially starting up on June 4.

The new service, a boon for summer travel to both Nassau and the wider Out Islands of The Bahamas, will be running between June 4 and Aug. 4, The Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism confirmed to Caribbean Journal.

The new route comes as The Bahamas experiences record-breaking visitor totals.

Last year, the destination posted 9.65 million visitors, combining air and sea arrivals. That included a record-breaking 1.7 million foreign air arrivals.

This year, the hope is for an even bigger number, with projections for more than 2 million stopover arrivals — which would be, of course, another record for the destination.

The move is part of Southwest’s shift to the increasingly important Orlando market, a city that more and more air carriers are looking to for Caribbean routes.

Southwest is the largest carrier in Orlando.

“The expansion of Southwest Airlines’ Central Florida route map to include a new daily service to Nassau is another testimony to the government’s efforts and commitment to grow air stopover arrivals throughout our 16-islands destination aggressively,” said B Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Chester Cooper.
