Puerto Rico Air Traffic Keeps Up Sizzling Growth

puerto rico

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

While some destinations in the Caribbean are starting to see tourism numbers cool down, Puerto Rico continues to see sizzling air passenger traffic, according to new data from ASUR, which manages Puerto Rico’s main airport.

Domestic traffic at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan was 1.021 million last month, a sizable 20.5 percent increase over the same period in the already-strong month of June 2022.

International traffic, while typically far lower in San Juan than domestic, still saw 36.4 percent growth to 141,397 in June.

Both numbers are extremely high for what has been a slow tourism season in the wider region so far.

For the year, domestic traffic in San Juan (meaning traffic from the mainland United States) is up 15.5 percent over last year to 5.492 million.

International traffic is up 46.3 percent to 613,142 so far in 2023.

Can Puerto Rico keep up numbers like this? So far it has been able to, continuing a trend that began in the heart of the pandemic when travelers were seeking a destination they could visit without a passport.
