By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 19, 2023

Cancun has been posting sizzling tourism numbers for the last three years, a trend that is continuing through this summer. The Mexican Caribbean hotspot is the top international destination for Americans planning their summer vacations, according to a new report from insurance company Allianz.

The travel insurance company examined more than 1.6 million flight itineraries between fight and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day. The results? Cancun was the top international getaway spot, followed by San Jose del Cabo, Mexico and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

Nearly 30 percent of American travelers were planning an international vacation this summer.

Cancun held the top spot for the seventh consecutive year, according to Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.

The data looked at customers who booked airfare and package paths for partners that offer Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance.

Other Caribbean destinations in the top 10 included Aruba, Jamaica and Nassau in The Bahamas.
