The Caribbean’s Nature Island has a major new hotel brand: InterContinental.

IHG’s InterContinental brand has officially debuted at the former Kempinski resort in Dominica, marking its first foray into the Eastern Caribbean.

“The moment we’ve all been waiting for is here,” the resort said in a statement.

It’s a major injection of energy for the property and for the island, after the stunning hotel property largely failed to gain traction after debuting just before the onset of the pandemic.

The 151-room resort is set at the edge of Dominica’s Cabrits National Park in the north of the island.

It’s home to four outdoor pools (one with a swim-up bar), a destination spa called Cabrits and a fitness center, among other amenities.

The hotel has 8,475 square feet of indoor meeting space, along with three outdoor event spaces (and a 2,500-square-foot beach event space).

The Dominica property is also the first-ever InterContinental resort in the English-speaking Caribbean; InterContinental’s regional portfolio has largely focused on Mexico and Central America: destinations like Panama, Cancun, and Guatemala.

The opening is a significant boost for Dominica, which is now accessed by regularly-scheduled, nonstop service on American Airlines from Miami. That service has helped open up travel to the island in a way that has never existed before.

And the island’s wonders are on the travel radar in a new way, from the geothermal snorkeling at Champagne Reef to the Emerald Pool waterfall to the history and vibrant culture of the Kalinago Territory.

The hotel joins a growing portfolio of luxury resorts on the island, led of course by the world-renowned Secret Bay and another hotel that just opened its doors, the Coulibri Ridge in southern Dominica.

Kempinski still has one beach resort in the Caribbean, the Kempinski Cancun (a former Rtiz-Carlton it took over at the end of last year).
