Top regional carrier Cape Air has officially launched its newest route in the Caribbean: regular service between St Thomas and Nevis.

The new service is a major new link for Nevis, which typically receives most of its visitors via ferry from neighboring St Kitts.

The flights are operating daily, with two flights on Sundays — adding up to eight roundtrips each week.

“We hope to see a longstanding relationship with Cape Air moving forward,” the Nevis Tourism Authority said in a statement.

The new route opens up the vast network of cities that fly into St Thomas to Nevis; since the onset of the pandemic, St Thomas has become one of the most active airports in the Caribbean, with its surging travel demand leading to a wave of new flight routes to the USVI.

The launch also marks a return to Nevis for the airline, which had not served the island since the onset of the pandemic. The carrier had previously flown to Nevis out of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“We welcome the return of Cape Air to Nevis,” said Nevis Premier Mark Brantley. “I encourage the traveling public to use this new service and thank Cape Air for recommitting to Nevis and the Vance Amory International Airport.”

It’s another boost for Nevis’ tourism product, focused on authentic Caribbean charm, history (Alexander Hamilton was born on the island) and eco-tourism — Nevis’ dormant volcano, Nevis Peak, is one of the region’s most sought-after hiking destinations.

Nevis has also found fame of late as a burgeoning film destination, with a film industry that began during the pandemic and has now produced several high-profile films including the recent Kelsey Grammar and Elizabeth Hurley vehicle, Christmas in Paradise.

That is leading Nevis tourism officials to serious optimism for visitor numbers in 2023.

Cape Air has been one of the top small carriers in the Caribbean for decades, complementing the airline’s long history in New England.

Its growing Caribbean network includes Tortola, Vieques, Mayaguez, Culebra, Virgin Gorda, St Thomas, St Croix and Nevis.
