Expedia: Americans Eyeing Cancun, Punta Cana for Post-Holiday Vacations

After the holidays, Americans are eyeing what Expedia is calling “nothing-cations,” trips where the objective is simply warm weather and relaxation, the travel giant said this week.

In the company’s latest report, Expedia said a survey of 4,000 American travelers showed 96 percent of respondents wanted to send a portion of their next trip doing “absolutely nothing.”

So where are they looking?

More than a quarter of getaways planned this month alone are to beach destinations, led by Cancun, Punta Cana and the Riviera Maya, according to Expedia.

Those destinations are already seeing double-digit increases in demand compared to the same time in 2019.

“There’s a time and place for an action-packed vacation itinerary, but our data shows the first trip after the hectic holiday season calls for a more relaxed agenda,” says Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group brands public relations. “For most travelers, getting the most out of their next vacation means setting aside dedicated time for nothing.”

Indeed, 62 percent of respondents said “doing nothing” was their favorite part of the vacation.

The company said parents of children younger than 4 were in particular need of such a trip, with a higher-than-average “post-holiday burnout.”
