The island destination of Cozumel in Mexico is off to a strong start in 2020, according to new data from ASUR, which manages Cozumel’s airport.

Cozumel International Airport reported 58,437 passengers in January, representing a 5.9 percent increase compared to the same month in 2019.

That was buoyed by an 11.8 percent increase in domestic traffic from within Mexico, and four percent growth in international traffic.

The latter accounted for 43,294 passengers in January, ASUR said.

While Cozumel has long been a popular cruise destination, the island, which is renowned for its dive offering, has seen continued growth in stayover tourism in recent years.
