Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in more than 14 months, according to new photos released by the government.

According to the images, Castro met with a group of 33 Venezuela nationals who had just arrived on the island as part of a Cuba-Venezuela solidarity event.

The group was visiting a primary school in Havana.

“Fidel is full of vitality,” the government wrote in a statement.

Castro did not appear in public for more than a year through the beginning of 2015, leading to rumours of his death.

Soon after, Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona said he had received a letter from Castro and that he was “doing very well.”

He next appeared in a photo with a University student in February.
