The Belmond La Samanna resort in St Martin has named Michael SChoonewagen as its new general manager.

Schoonewagen comes to the property after nearly five years at the St Regis Bora Bora.

“Michael’s luxury industry expertise and global perspective makes him an ideal fit to step into the role as General Manager of this legendary Belmond hotel,” said Ali Kasikci, regional managing director for North America, Mexico, the Caribbean and Brazil at Belmond. “In addition to his appointment and the added support of Director of Sales for both our Leisure and Group business, we are confident this new team will bring the connections and determination to continue to elevate this prestigious property.”

Belmond is a rebranding of the former Orient-Express Hotels.

““I am proud to be joining the Belmond team – a company I’ve always admired – and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season at Belmond La Samanna,” Schoonewagen said. “After working in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for nearly 5 years, I’m glad to be back in civilization and continuing to inspire and cultivate the next generation of Belmond La Samanna guests, who eventually become family and will call the resort their home away from home..”
