The Grenadian island of Carriacou could soon have a new hotel, according to the government.

The site of the hotel would be at the Mermaid Tavern, once a well-known hotel on the island originally called the Mermaid Inn.

Leo Joseph, a local businessman who purchased the building and has begun demolition work, said the hotel was planning an opening in August 2015.

The hotel, which will retain its name, will have around 18 to 20 rooms, according to Joseph.

The hotel will also retain its signature Callaloo restaurant.

The two-story property is located on Main Street in the town of Hillsborough in Carriacou, which has a population of about 10,000.
