Guyanese President Donald Ramotar has pledged to intervene at the cabinet level following a spate of pirate attacks on the country’s Pomeroon River this weekend.

Pirates attacked 15 fishing boats with a total of 19 fishermen aboard, robbing, beating and binding them. The attack also inflated serious damage to their boats.

Ramotar met today with a delegation of fishermen, assuring them that the “necessary interventions” would be guided by assessments of reports on a daily basis.

Bharrat Kalicharran, one of those victimized, said he was attacked by six masked men.

Guyana has tightened maritime security following this weekend’s attacks.
