Cayman Governor Duncan Taylor signed the country’s new Gender Equality Bill yesterday, legislation aimed at promoting and ensuring gender equality in the workplace.

“This is an important piece of legislation,” Taylor said. “Equality of opportunity, treatment and reward is a fundamental human right for all and I am delighted that is now enshrined in our law.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Solicitor General for England and Wales Edward Garnier and Community Affairs, Gender and Housing Minister Mike Adam. Chief Officer Dorine Whittaker and Senior Policy Advisor Tammy Ebanks were also on hand.

Garner is currently in the Cayman Islands to attend the annual conference of attorneys general of the British Overseas Territories and to meet with local human rights officials.

The new law will take effect Jan. 31, 2012.
