Melia Is Opening a Major New Theme Park in Punta Cana

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 3, 2021

Melia Hotels International is opening a major new theme park destination in Punta Cana.

The company is planning to open what it calls a “world-class theme park” called Katmandu in the fall of 2022, in partnership with Falcon’s Beyond Global.

The first phase will include Katmandu Park Punta Cana, modeled on the popular European theme park of the same name that draws millions of visitors each year.

That includes “cutting edge” rides, a “Suspended Theater” and other attractions.

The second phase will add a “premier entertainment, dining and retail destination,” according to the company.

“This major joint venture between Meliá Hotels International and Falcon’s Beyond in Punta Cana, an exceptional destination where we’ve been working for over 30 years, will become the first world-class theme park and entertainment destination in the Caribbean,” said Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer.

That’s along with a major rebuild of its first resort in Punta Cana, Paradisus Punta Cana, along with significant renovations of the Paradisus Palma Real resort.

Those projects are slated for completion in 2023.

“Punta Cana is where our Paradisus by Meliá brand got started with the opening of Paradisus Punta Cana in 1995,” said André P. Gerondeau, COO of Meliá Hotels International. “With this new plan, it will be replaced with a destination resort that adds a new degree of luxury to a brand that is loved by some of the most discerning travelers in the world, providing exceptional experiences based on an all-inclusive luxury service, extraordinary locations and a sustainable and responsible management philosophy”.
