American Airlines’ Newest Caribbean Destination

By: Alexander Britell - July 6, 2021

American Airlines is launching flights to one of the Caribbean’s tiniest destinations.

Beginning in December, the world’s largest airline will be kicking off service to its newest destination in the region: the island of San Andres off the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

American will be operating flights to San Andres’ Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport twice weekly, with service on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

It’s American’s seventh destination in Colombia, and its second on the country’s Caribbean coast, alongside the charming city of Cartagena.

“We are proud to strengthen our footprint at our MIA hub later this year,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, Vice President of MIA Hub Operations.

It’s a big boost for the 10-square-mile San Andres, long a well-kept secret and a destination that’s been far off the travel radar of Americans.

San Andres is one of the region’s top diving spots, with nearly 40 dive sites, and it’s an island hopper’s paradise — while you fly to San Andres, you can travel by ferry or plane to nearby islands including Providencia and Santa Catalina, too.

Hotel options range from tiny hotels like the Hotel Casablanca and Casa Harb to a portfolio of all-inclusives by Colombian resort company Decameron.
