A Totally New Kind of Stand-Up Paddleboard

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 19, 2016

It’s become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports — stand-up paddling. And it’s not hard to understand why. There’s a special kind of experience as you effectively stand on top of the water, moving by only your own strength and balance.

But now there’s a new kind of stand-up paddling experience: a stand-up pedalboard.

This is the Hobie Cat Mirage Eclipse, the latest innovation from the company famous for its ubiquitous sport catamarans.

Yes, it’s a stand-up paddleboard, with a twist: a secondary form of propulsion called MirageDrive, powered by your peddling legs, not a paddle.

That means you move by pushing on pedals, with fingertip lever-based steering controls for a totally unique on-the-water experience.

It also means an intense leg workout, the kind you don’t get in a typical SUP jaunt.

Additionally, it provides an even more stable ride, whether you’re on the water near your home or on any part of the Caribbean sea.

And don’t worry — the aluminum alloy handlebar can be removed in seconds, if you want to use it as a traditional SUP.

Then there’s the versatility: the Eclipse covers everything, whether you wlike standing and fishing (there are also rigs to add four rod holders or just seeking a different fitness experience.

Now, we love traditional SUPs — but if you’re looking for a new way to get out on the water, it’s a rather interesting and fun watersport. And the removable handlebar means you can enjoy it both as a regular SUP and as this “enhanced” version.
