Guyana is looking to attract small-ship cruises.

The South American country that’s home to the Caribbean’s economic headquarters has been looking to ramp up its tourism sector in recent years, and now it has its sights set on small-ship cruises, according to Donald Sinclair, director general of Guyana’s tourism ministry.

“Our hope is to expand the space for cruise visits as part of our tourism product,” Sinclair said. “Smaller vessels are being anticipated as the tourists/passengers will be provided with customised experiences during their stay in Guyana.”

Sinclair was speaking after the arrival of the Noble Caledonia cruise ship in Port Georgetown this week.

Another small ship, the Minvera, visited Guyana at the end of last year.

“most of the passengers on the ship… come ashore,” said Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority Indranauth Haralsingh. “With a cleaned up city and so many dramatic improvements, I think that the message that will be going out is that, hey, this is a great, fascinating and very friendly, warm hospitable place to visit.”
