CARICOM’s Meeting of the Heads of State and Government launched in Nassau on Thursday morning.

The Bahamas is hosting the meeting as the current chair of CARICOM.

The summit, which is held twice a year, is focusing in its current iteration on CARICOM’s “human, cultural and natural assets,” according to a statement from the regional body.

It is being held under the theme of “Leveraging CARICOM’s Human, Cultural and Natural Assets for the Economic Development of the Community.”

“It is the intention of The Bahamas to put four-square and centre for our deliberations, a major effort and initiative to further enhance and develop our human capital,” Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie said at the recent CELAC summit. “I believe that the future of all of our nations and economies would be greatly enhanced by increased attention to the needs of our young people. Education, culture and sports are probably the most accessible modules to target in their regard in our Region.”

The summit, which is being held at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort, concludes Thursday.
