Haiti’s long-delayed legislative and municipal elections could be back on track.

The office of Haiti President Michel Martelly issued a statement on Monday announcing an agreement reached between the opposition and major political parties for the realization of elections this year.

The agreement would also form a new Provisional Electoral Council to organize the upcoming elections.

Each of nine sectors will have a seat on the council .

Martelly’s office said each sector, which ranged from the peasants to the university sector to the trade unions, would have 24 hours to present two independent persons with no party affiliation as a main choice and an alternative choice for a seat on the council.

The announcement came on the fifth anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, an occasion that was marked by solemn ceremonies across the country.

The long-stewing electoral crisis led to the resignation last month of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.
