St Lucia has officially established diplomatic ties with Mauritius.

The agreement between the two countries aims to “promote cooperation and is in line with Saint Lucia’s goal of deepening relations with developing countries,” St Lucia’s government said in a statement.

The ties were made official in New York during a signing ceremony between Ambassador Menissa Rambally, Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the United Nations and Mauritius’ Ambassador Milan Jaya Nyamrajsingh Meetarbhan.

“This latest formal solidification further exemplifies Saint Lucia’s diplomatic engagement with non-traditional partners, which is critical in building mutually beneficial partnerships to address Saint Lucia’s interest in the context of an ever-evolving global environment,” the government said.

Meetarbhan said that while the two countries were geographically distant, they shared similarities as developing countries and those sharing cultures like a Creole hiertage.
